School of Visual Arts Summer Program Archive Book

SVA hosts the Culture, Design, and Fine Arts in New York (CDFNY) Summer Program every year for international college students to develop their creative abilities. In the summer of 2016, I was offered a scholarship to participate in this program, where I enrolled in illustration courses and had the chance to immerse myself in the vibrant and diverse cultures of NYC.

Upon returning to Korea, my fellow program participants and I were inspired to create an archive book to preserve our collective experiences and share them with others. Our goal was to capture the vibrancy of our memories and the novelty of our illustrations. The book was actually published and it still remains in the school library.

The main cover for the archive was inspired by colorful and unique designs of the receipts that I had collected in NYC. Personally, it was a striking contrast to the uniform and monotonous receipts commonly found in Korea.

We decided to title our archive book "그리다" a Korean word that has dual meanings of "to draw" and "to miss." This title perfectly encapsulates the essence of our project, which not only celebrates our artistic achievements but also allows us to cherish the memories and connections we made during our time at the program.

My vision for the cover was to create a depiction of the famous NYC skyline using an array of receipts and tickets, symbolizing the diverse experiences and memories that we had all collected during our time in the city.
